Have you participated in the mirror challenge yet? The mirror photos has always been quite popular in the photography world, but I am loving the latest trend for it! Mirror gives us plenty of options to play around with and it challenges our creativity! As many mirrors as many ideas! You can use a small portable mirror, like the one you have in your powder, a bit bigger vintage mirror with a hand, round hanging mirror or a standing one! There isn’t a bad mirror, trust me!
Here are my 5 top tips for perfect mirror shot!
1. LOCATION
2. ANGLE
3. POSITION OF A TRIPOD / PHOTOGRAPHER
4. FOCUS
5. POSE
6. PROPS
1. LOCATION
First you have to decide where you want to take the pic and what will be visible in the mirror reflection. Blue Sky? Plain white wall? Trees and flowers? Bathroom? Living room? Street? Knowing that we can start planning the rest.
2. ANGLE
What about the perspective? Will you lay it on the floor, hang or maybe hold? It all depends what effect you want to achieve.
3. POSITION OF A TRIPOD / PHOTOGRAPHER
Put a tripod (or your photographer :p) in a position that it (or he) doesn’t appear in the mirror reflection and catches you exactly the way you want. For example when we were shooting my photographer was on the left side on the mirror and I was on the right side, so I could have barely see myself in it, or what I saw wasn’t the same what he has seen. It was a bit confusing, but my photographer was directing me how I should turn my head and that way we managed to perfectly catch my reflection.
4. FOCUS
What will be in focus? Your reflection, you, both? On my photo my reflection is in the focus as this is where we wanted to drag the attention. I think showing yourself or at least a part of your body is a great as it makes the picture more interesting and also shows that that’s an actual mirror pic, not for example just a simple portrait.
5. POSE
Pose! Pose often gives the character to the picture. Will it be a portrait shot? What do you want to express? Or maybe full body? Fun, elegant, fashion? Don’t be afraid to try something new, sometimes the weirdest poses look the best! Serious look makes the picture looks more fashion ;).
6. PROPS
Think about accessories! You can decorate your mirror the way you like just to make it a little bit more extra! Or maybe hold a lipstick, a flower or a newspaper? Whatever will suit best the style of the picture! 🙂 My theme was flowery/boho so I attached plenty of flowers all around the mirror and also held a rose on some shots.
Happy shooting everyone xxx
